For several years, Belgatom has been present in Hungary through a bilateral cooperation agreement between Belgium and Hungary that is financed by the Belgian Ministry of Economic Affairs. The beneficiary of this funding is PURAM, the public agency for waste management in Hungary.
In Hungary, the Parliament has recently approved the construction of a repository site for low and intermediate level waste produced by Paks NPP (4 VVER-440 model V213 Nuclear Power Plants). The construction works of this repository located at Bátaapáti have started in the summer of 2005.

Therefore, the elaboration of waste acceptance criteria has become a priority issue for PURAM. To support PURAM in this task, in the framework of the 2004 and 2005 cooperation agreements, Belgatom has provided PURAM with technical reports describing the Belgian practice to demonstrate the compliance of conditioned NPP waste with the waste acceptance criteria (WAC) defined by ONDRAF/NIRAS.
The following reports have been prepared for PURAM:
- The description of the qualification file set up for demonstrating the compliance of evaporator concentrates waste drums with WAC;
- The description of the approval file set up for demonstrating the compliance of standard 400-l drums with WAC;
- The description of the qualification file set up for demonstrating the compliance of filters and miscellaneous solid waste drums with WAC;
- The description of the qualification file set up for demonstrating the compliance of ion exchange resins waste drums with WAC.
The content of these 4 technical reports has been presented to PURAM at the occasion of a meeting held in Budapest on December 19, 2005.

The cooperation activities has been pursued in 2006 by:
- Preparing a technical report describing which key process parameters must be controlled to ensure that the conditioning concrete correctly immobilizes and embeds the filters and miscellaneous solid waste;
- Organising a visit of PURAM representatives to the Belgian NPPs in order to show them how the procedures to prepare the concrete are implemented and how the associated controls of the key process parameters are performed on site.
