ONDRAF/NIRAS,
the Belgian Agency for Management of Radioactive Waste and Fissile
Materials, is in charge of setting up dismantling plans for several
types of nuclear installations in Belgium, including cyclotrons
such as the ones owned by MDS Nordion. MDS Nordion, which is located
in Fleurus, is a global leader in radioisotope technology, supplying
the European market with radioisotopes used to prevent, diagnose
and treat disease.
Setting up the
dismantling plan of the cyclotrons is necessary to be able to calculate
the associated dismantling costs. In order to assess the masses
and activities of waste that will be generated during the dismantling
operations, a model of the activation of the concrete of the cyclotron
must be developed. To perform this modeling task, ONDRAF/NIRAS issued
a call for tenders in October 2004.
Belgatom was
selected as the successful tenderer by ONDRAF/NIRAS in December
2004. In the selection process, Belgatom’s expertise with
the modeling of the activation of the concrete of the reactor buildings
of Doel and Tihange NPPs, which was used to assess the dismantling
costs of these power plants, has been a significant asset.
The project
which is scheduled to last 6 months will be performed with computer
code MCNPX, enabling to consider protons and neutrons in coupled
mode.
