Thanks
to studies carried out by Tractebel Energy Engineering, the duration
specified in the Technical Specifications between the reactor shutdown
and the refuelling itself has been drastically reduced for Doel 1
and Doel 2 nuclear units.
This means
that operators are now able to start the refuelling operations about
25 hours earlier than before. The actual benefit for Electrabel
amounted to18 hours saved on the last outage of Doel 1
(August-September 2000), where these new Technical Specifications
were first applied.
This net gain
on the critical path was possible thanks to a re-evaluation of the
radiological consequences of the (potential) fuel handling accident
and to the demonstration that the cooling of the spent fuel stored
in the pools is ensured under all operating conditions.
