In the frame of the decommissioning of nuclear installations in Europe, the Directorate General for Energy and Transport of the European Commission (EC DG TREN) issued an open call for tenders to study the following topics:
- Analysis and quantification of parameters governing the character and quantity of radioactive decommissioning waste (lot 1);
- Comparison among different decommissioning funds methodologies for nuclear installations (lot 2).
Belgatom and his subcontractor DDR Consult decided to concentrate only on lot 1. Belgatom’s expertise encompasses several types of reactors PWR, VVER and RBMK operated in Europe and was mainly gained through the following projects:
- The assessment of the dismantling cost of the Belgian NPPs;
- The assistance to SCK/CEN to dismantle the BR-3 PWR reactor in Mol;
- The technical design for decommissioning Kozloduy NPP units 1 & 2 (VVER);
- The participation in the Project Management Unit (PMU) for decommissioning Ignalina NPP (RBMK).
The project, which is scheduled to last 18 months, has started with a kick-off meeting in Luxemburg and is now on-going for about one year.
